Our Latest Wood Project

So, I'm kind of a wood fanatic. I love the look of it, the unique grain and color of each piece, the smell - it's even to the point that I have a hard time getting rid of any scrap pieces, no matter how small. I am sure I can find another use for it! 

We have a buddy who has a lumber shop just down the road from us and he specializes in live edge wood slabs, some of which are just gigantic and so awesome. I often drop by his shop just to browse and take in the beauty of whatever he has recently received from the forest. 

One of my favorites in his selection is bay laurel. It's a tree that grows up the west coast from San Diego, California to Reedsport, Oregon. It is not found more than 160 miles inland from the Pacific Coastline. A few months ago, my wife and I went in and picked out a piece of bay laurel to make a coffee table for our studio. It was my first time really working with a live edge wood slab in this way and I loved it! It was so cool to see it come together, watch the grain come alive after sanding and oiling it, and then finding the perfect base for it. It's a piece I imagine we will have and enjoy for a very long time!
